The example is from 1592 Gastoldi's Il Trionfo Di Dori. 'Amid the murmuring of crystal fountains, the nymphs and shepherds sang "O happy joyful day."

Expressing an outgoing emotion is done by a rise in pitch. Doing so in the major scale, asserts an active emotion of joy as shown by the example. While substituting the minor for the major third in the progression, the resulting phrase becomes expressive of an outgoing feeling of pain, a protest against misfortune, an assertion of sorrow.
